About DK

I love everything about words: the power of metaphor to stir people to action, the sensate descriptions that evoke time and place, the dialogue that brings characters to life, the rhythms that make readers want to turn the page. And of course, what makes any work resonate is its emotional core. Let’s work together to make magic with words. ~ DK

Editing is my passion. It’s like turning straw into gold. It’s like a puzzle that, when finally assembled, reveals a work of art.

I have been a professor for decades in two large research universities and have directed many dissertations. I have mentored students through drafts of their work, and I understand the power of clear expression.

I am the author of five books, including a volume of poetic translations from Arabic and French into English that was shortlisted for the ALTA National Translation Prize in 2021. I am a Guggenheim Fellow, and the recipient of many awards.

I am also a seasoned ethnographer. I have interviewed scores of people in different countries, have listened deeply to what they had to say, and have written their stories in ways they recognize and understand.

I have thirty years of teaching experience at the Master’s and Doctoral levels. I am now offering writing courses for adults.
